In maya all the models is built up of a mesh of When you have finised modelinging a model in maya you might want to texture the model. To do this you must unwrap the Think of it like pealing an orange and flattening out the shell. In maya you do this by different projections, like cylindrical and spherical projections. And you end up with a 2d version of the mesh, that you can bring into photoshop and paint on to create a texture.
